8) Demo practice must be in addition to curriculum practice

Ink Cartridge Failure

So apparently the ink cartridge failed to take the replacement ink... as the ports were washed clean off by the cleaning solution.... GREAT....

now I have to get another cartridge.... or do I try getting this one in the printer filled.

That parental called me, and I had a stern talk with them, about their behavior and especially since it was a grandmother, how she should know better and that it was very inappropriate behavior. I informed her that an apology letter was the least I expected from her before I even offered a solution to her grandson's problem.

Whence the letter was agreed upon, I gave this solution:

On January 3rd, 2008, at Muchenberger Center Gym for Green belts and above, due to the missed two weeks due to weather, I will offer a special Kata Class during the 30 minutes that is usually dedicated to Sparring. This time is 7:30-8pm. It will cost the same as a Sparring class, $2, and at the end students wishing can retest on their kata(s). Or if students have practiced hard over this break, they may retest before the first class by coming at 5:30pm. It should be stressed that kata is second to self defense in importance for rank advancement. Green belts must pass Taikyoku Sho Dan to get to blue, and moves 1-8 (first keop) are required for a Green Belt Black Stripe. Blue belts must know Kumo E Dan and the same 1-8 for a Black Stripe. Purple Belts should be able to perform all of Pyong E Dan for a Black Stripe and both Pyong E Dan and Pyong Sam Dan for an Orange belt. Well aren't parents grand

rather than take the blame for themselves or their students, they wish to make an emerging instructor feel lousy. One student hadn't practiced in the time off and had known for multiple semesters that the thing keeping him from blue belt was kata, and then he didn't even remember the name at testing tonight. However, none of this was his/his parents fault, but rather that he tested in front of someone who was, and always is, much nicer to kata testing students than his actual Sensei. She even went out of her way to give him extra help after everyone was done testing, but now next week if in fact he comes to class I believe I am going to have to have a talk with his parent, and insist an apology letter be written before I allow him to attend another class. She was blatantly disrespectful and wanted to cause a scene in front of all the other parents to make herself important by demeaning what someday I hope to be a much better than myself instructor.

Bills and Quarters Only!

So at work they had the Cheese Balls thing, and I brought it home to add to my coin catcher collection. I decided that I needed to go ahead and make the emergency fund jug. So I am going to put any $1 bills and Quarters into it. So far pinching from the other jugs and my wallet, it probably has $20 in there. Then I sealed it up with Red belt tape, except for the drop slot. So now I have an ultra emergency fund to break into...

testing time

There are always great triumphs and hard decisions at this time of the semester.

Some hard choices are how great a triumph to make, and if their mental state matches their dedication this semester.

Others are whether to pass or hold back. The pass decision weighs heavily on making a choice to give the student the benefit of a doubt that in the next semester they will surpass what they have shown in this semester.

Then there's the, well they learned quite a bit this semester, do I pass two stripes, or give them a buffer in case next semester isn't up to this one's par, and they can then still move up a rank the next go around.

Green Belts usually get:
1-2 missing the first turn
1-4 missing the second
1-8 missing the third
1-12 forgetting to go back down the same way
or all 1-20 of Taikyoku Sho Dan

and the general rule is 1-8 equals Black Stripe
less than that equals White Stripe
over 8 but less than 20 Blue Stripe
and 20 Blue Belt

however, what if a student has shown improvement in many areas, but their kata is the same level or less than the previous semester.

In fact I have a Green Belt Blue Stripe that went from 1-16 last semester to 1-2 this semester, with multiple chances, and time in the same class to practice and retest.

Also those who were unable to attain the amount were given a second chance this week at some locations, but failed to practice at home. Does this then make it okay to keep them the same belt... Hard decisions.... definitely.

I will say that no one got a demotion, although I contemplated it for one student who has been the same rank for over one year, due to his inaction of practice.

Multitude of medals for sure.....

However, I think I might soon have time to work on my to do list within the next few days.
