However, you do get 40 suggested followings, which are easier to follow, than to not, unless you use the javascript console:

That makes it pretty easy.

Then, there are bots that will automatically start following you as soon as you have a new account. I didn't see them start sending anything, but I did see several followers magically appear after only a couple minutes.
