Sounds Are Back in the Porsche
When I got to KC, I realized that the speakers were 1975 originals, but the stereo was solid 80s, maybe early 90s. Then, trying to hear the radio, they were all staticy.
So, pulled them out, found COMPLETELY blown. Was getting things at the part store, and they happened to have some perfect match ones in stock, and so I grabbed those. Went home and installed them.
Turned on the radio, and it was clear, and the cassette adapter worked great, but could only hear very low. Diagnosis, too little power. Went to the box, and the speakers were 200w max at 4 Ohms, with a solid 30 watts definitely needed. The radio was a whopping 30 watts x 4 channels. Meaning 1/4 of the power needed was getting to the speakers.
Today, I went to Best Buy found a $70 stereo, with an $11 2-year replacement warranty, with CD and Audio in, and a removable faceplate (good as it doesn't have an actual key on = more power).
Then, I went to Home Depot to grab some of the spliceless connectors. On the way back I saw the old Thai House owner in traffic, and she's opening a restaurant about 1 mile from my new house, and wanted to show me the progress.
Got back to the house, and found out they had changed the working wire size on the connectors, and no longer did they work for the car wiring. Quite sad was I.
Went through and spliced all the wires, old school style, powered up right away, and WOW, much more sound than ever came out of the old system.
Now, I have a pointless cassette adapter, but oh well, I had a audio out/in wire from when I was traveling in the rental, and now it works for the real car. Also found the hands-free worked well (without the car running), and was reminded I definitely want to get the exhaust fixed, as earlier at the light I could smell the engine through the heater.
