so much thought

and yet so little result on whether or not to go for the test with Derek and his Hanshi, from the school we are using this summer.

My brother gave the best advice, which is the usual, hit up straight, what is the purpose of offering me this....

Is the lack of ability to explain why I "should?" just b/c you want to offer more for me, or want more for you?

So far they have stated:

"You owe it to your instructor"
"You owe it to your students"
"You owe it to yourself"
"You owe it to martial arts"

But ()@*#&$% Americans don't understand rankings in their original intention. If Shogo (teaching) ranks have become ego trips should their be Shogo ranks?

What is the true benefit of me passing another test?

I have gained most of my true knowledge whilst this 2nd degree.

Knowledge and rank are not interchangeable, hence one of the reasons a Shogo ranking was devised to begin with.

They actually asked was it okay to be in college indefinitely and was that a fair trade?

I replied people do it and are fine, and if the school gets their money and you get the education you want, why not?

So I shall hit them up one at a time.. about some true intentions and do what works best, look deep within them to determine if they are being true or are attempting their own ego promotion through me. Because in reality a degree on your belt means nothing without the knowledge through training and application.

I see what you are saying. But, no one can figure out what you should do except you. Some things to think about would be: Would you consider it if it wasn't Derek? You DO live in america, so when you say American's don't understand the original meanings, you have to remember who your "audience" is. (basically, it possibly could benefit you to say you have a different rank). And finally, why SHOULDN'T you?

As far as "owing" people, HOW? I don't get it. Sure, your instructor would like to see you advance, but wouldn't it be better if your instructor knew you were learning rather than just passing a test. Your students? Are they going to benefit from it? I don't think it would change much in how you do things, so I don't think they would even know. Like I said, you will be saying it to parents and they may be impressed. Yourself? I can see this. You say you have learned a lot more recently. You should have something to show for it, in theory. Owing it to martial arts? That sounds off to me - like they want something from you, but not sure what. I'm just not getting that one, but I can't think in the abstract in this one I guess.

I see how you could think they are wanting you to do it FOR them. It is an ego boost to see a student advance, but TECHNICALLY you aren't a student. But, Derek as a boss would look better employing a higher ranking person, and this school would look better having one more higher ranking graduate.

This is really long to say, do what you want. Good luck
